RESOLVE THE PEOPLE PROBLEMS

MUKIM & KAMPONG CONSULTATIVE COUNCILS

I like to refresh the titah made by His Majesty during the historic launching of the first-ever General Assembly of the Mukim and Kampong Consultative Council held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas in 1994.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang diPertuan of Brunei Darussalam urged people to ensure the success of Brunei’s community-based consensus building system. It is the mirror of the social development of the country and it will reflect the maturity of the society. The Mukim and Kampong Consultative Councils and Committees are platform for grass root communities and leaders to do what they can for the nation. These are the platforms in which the community, as well as state and royal dignitaries contribute voluntarily without expecting rewards.

For record purposes, the Mukim and Kampong Consultative Council was established in February 1993 with the objective of fine-turning and strengthening the political system of the country at grass root level. It was formed as part of an effort to provide the grass root community with a more effective platform in voicing their opinions and grievances to a higher authorities while playing their role in nation building, other objectives of the councils are to strengthen and make the institution of Penghulu and Kampong Ketua more effective in the political and social development of the country.

His Majesty titah, described and underscored the importance of leadership and consensus building at grass root level in protecting the public interest, these consultative committees are manifestation of the clear method Brunei is pursing in dealing and resolving problems through consultation and consensus.

The question is…..Can the M & KCC really resolve the people problems? (after 27 years established)
